2021 National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist

Berlin High School is pleased to announce that Julia Oakes has been named a Finalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships based on students’ Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) scores.  To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.  Merit Scholars are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.  The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of US high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.  According to the NMSC, by the conclusion of the 2021 competition about 7,500 Finalists will be selected as National Merit Scholarship recipients.

Berlin High School Principal Eileen Eustis shared, “Achieving Finalist standing is an impressive accomplishment.  We are proud of Julia’s continued hard work and look forward to celebrating her future success.”  In addition to excelling in academics, Julia is a multi-sport varsity athlete and participates in numerous clubs and activities including FIRST Robotics.  Julia plans to attend a four year college to study biomedical engineering.
