Berlin High School is proud to announce that this year’s Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are Nicholas Ebrahimi and Madison Sadowski. Both Nicholas and Madison are exemplary students and athletes who maintain a healthy, productive balance between academic and extracurricular activities so that they can put their best efforts into all of their commitments. Nicholas and Madison were recognized as the Berlin High Scholar-Athletes at the annual banquet held at the Aqua Turf on Sunday, May 4.

Nicholas Ebrahimi is an exceptional student, challenging himself with rigorous courses and pushing the boundaries of his intellectual capabilities. He has received numerous academic recognitions over his BHS academic career including the Spanish Educator Nomination Award, AP Biology Award, AP Chemistry Award, AP Scholar Award, the Howard Goding Lions Club Award, and the Rochester Institute of Technology Humanities and Social Science Award. He has earned High Honors status consistently throughout high school and has been elected to the National Honor Society and is Vice President of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society.

His athletic accolades are equally impressive. He was elected captain of the wrestling team in his junior and senior years and was named to the All CCC Conference. He was also elected captain of the track & field team as a junior and senior. His track & field events include shot put, discus, and hammer; he holds a Berlin High school record and placed eighth in the State of Connecticut. Nicky has also been a member of the varsity football team for the past four years.

Nicky has carefully considered his extracurricular activities to help him achieve his future career goals. He is part of multiple Berlin High independent study teams including one that works closely with UConn professors researching antimalarial drugs, researching plants that could be used to synthesize drugs with antimalarial properties. The other is a permaculture and biology team that addresses the aesthetic design of outdoor student life areas to improve health, wellness, and sustainability for students and the environment. As a member of the BHS Medical Club Nicky helped script, film, and produce a winter season health PSA. He then went on to help expand that club, cofounding the first Berlin High chapter of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) where he serves as vice president.

Nicky is a member of the very successful Mock Trial team. He has been nominated by school counselors to the Care Club to mentor struggling students. Nicky has been a member of the volleyball club (founder / president), a math peer tutor, Upbeat, Wilderness Club, volunteered as a coach with Minutemen Youth Wrestling and Berlin Bears Youth Football, and placed second in the DECA Connecticut competition. Nicky was nominated by staff as a program panelist in the ADL’s “Names Can Really Hurt Us” program presented at Berlin High to share personal hardships in support of incoming freshmen. Nicky serves as Senior Class Vice President, and is a member of the Principal’s Team, a group of students selected to represent the study body and provide feedback. To date, he has logged over 200 hours of community service. Nicky embodies the true spirit of leadership, inspiring and influencing others through his actions and serving as an outstanding role model throughout our school community. He plans to attend Trinity College where he will be a member of the wrestling team and will major in neuroscience before attending medical school.

Madelynn Sadowski consistently challenges herself both on the field and in the classroom. Athletically, she embodies leadership both on and off the field as a member of the varsity women’s soccer team and was elected captain senior year. She has been named to the CCC All-Conference, All-State, and CCC All-Academic soccer teams. She is also captain of the varsity women’s basketball team where she has earned the Redcoat Award, Grit Award, and has been named to the All-Herald, CCC All-Conference, and CCC All-Academic basketball teams. She holds the school record for most assists in a season and the all time assist record.

Academically, Madelynn has earned High Honors consistently throughout high school while pursuing a rigorous academic schedule. Her curiosity and willingness to engage deeply with the material often leads to class discussions and encourages her peers to think critically.

Madelynn’s involvement in extracurricular activities such as the Ryan T. Lee Youth Leadership Conference, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, and National Honor Society illustrate her commitment to personal growth and community service. Her work organizing fundraisers and participating in service projects demonstrates her understanding of civic responsibility and her desire to make a positive impact on her community.

Madelynn has faced injuries that have temporarily sidelined her. She approached these obstacles with maturity and patience, and her experiences with physical therapy fueled her interest in pursuing a career in sports medicine.
